• Iolite & Rainbow Moonstone Twisted Necklace

This beautiful necklace, part of the T's Twisted Collection has been made using the Japanese braiding technique of kumihimo, which means the gathering of threads.  The technique is thought to date back to the Nara Period, 645-784AD and is still used in Japan to this day.

This necklace combines iolite and rainbow moonstone chips on beading thread which are then braided using the kumihimo technique to create this beautiful twisted necklace.  The findings are silver plated copper.

A little bit of history, myth and legend

Iolite is steeped in history and has been called water sapphire due to its similarity to blue sapphire when cut.  It can be recognised by its strong pleochroism which is visible without equipment.  I hear you ask 'what is pleochroism?'.. well it is a property in a substance which causes it to look different colours when observed at different angles.  In iolite's case it is blue and gold.  The vikings made use of this property and thinly sliced iolite to navigate with.  They would hold the iolite up to the sky and by observing it through iolites, the Viking navigators were able to locate the exact position of the sun on overcast days. This is why iolite has been named the 'Vikings compass'.

The myth and legend behind iolite describes it as being able to strengthen eyesight or to enhance curiosity and achievement, guiding you through spiritual growth.

Moonstone as its name suggests is thought to hold the magic of the moon.  An amulet of protection for travellers and holds significance for lovers.  Moonstone has been used in roman jewellery for the last 2000 years and goes back further in jewellery from the orient.

Moonstones moon-like sheen comes from it being a member of the feldspar family and exhibits a chatoyance similar to that of labradorite.  Rainbow moonstone prismatic effect is thought to diffuse energy through the aura.  It is also thought to be associated with the crown chakra.
