• Iolite & rose quartz twisted gemstone bracelet

This bracelet iolite and rose quartz kumihimo bracelet forms part of the T's Twisted Collection.  Iolite and rose quartz nuggets have been combined using the ancient Japanese braiding technique of Kumihimo, examples of which can be found nearly 9000 years ago and is still used in Japan today.  Whilst this bracelet is not this old the iolite and rose quartz in it have a raft of history associated with them.

A little bit of history, myth and legend!

Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding technique.  Early examples of the use of braiding can be found as far back as the Jomon period (8000-300 BC) but did not become more common place until the Nara period of Japan's history (AD 645-784) where it was a simple form of single loop braiding.  Since these times kumihimo has become an integral part to Japanese culture and has been used in a functional and decorative way to lace up a Samuri and his horses armour.  In Japan today kumihimo braids are used to tie haori, jackets, and are used for tying on obi a kimono sash.

Iolite is steeped in history and has been called water sapphire due to its similarity to blue sapphire when cut.  It can be recognised by its strong pleochroism which is visible without equipment.  I hear you ask 'what is pleochroism?'.. well it is a property in a substance which causes it to look different colours when observed at different angles.  In iolite's case it is blue and gold.  The vikings made use of this property and thinly sliced iolite to navigate with.  They would hold the iolite up to the sky and by observing it through iolites, the Viking navigators were able to locate the exact position of the sun on overcast days. This is why iolite has been named the 'Vikings compass'.

The myth and legend behind iolite describes it as being able to strengthen eyesight or to enhance curiosity and achievement, guiding you through spiritual growth.
