A little bit of history, myth and legend

Aventurine has long been associated with luck, love and fortune.  It is a variety of chalcedony quartz characterised by its translucity and metallic like inclusions (sparkly bits to most of us!).  These sparkly bits cause what in aventurine is called 'aventurescence'.  Aventurine was first discovered by Venetian glass makers in Italy in the 18th century who were preparing molten glass and copper filings fell into the batch giving a sparkly glass which was from then on called 'goldstone'.  The name aventurine is derived from 'a' and 'ventura' the Italian for 'chance'.

In mythology aventurine is thought to be the stone of luck, with green aventurine thought to hold the most power compared to other colours.  It is thought to stimulate dreams, promote feelings of well being and give a positive outlook on life.  The ancient Tibetans often thought that aventurine could improve near sightedness and creativity.  As with all myth and legend it is up to you to decide what to believe.
