Vintage garnet & black spinel earrings
These Downton Abbey inspired earrings have been made with gold plated copper, black spinel rondelles and garnet faceted ovals. Unfortunately the colour of the garnet does not come over well in the photographs but it is a deep dark red colour.
A little but of history, myth and legend on garnet and spinel
Garnet is found in many places around the world and is most commonly known for its red colour. It is also found in many other colours from orange, to yellow and even green. The name garnet is derived from the medieval latin 'granatum' an adjective meaning 'deep red' but is thought to be associated with the word for pomegranate.
The Egyptians used garnet for decorative and ceremonial purposes and the romans wore and traded garnet stones. In some places garnet is thought to be associated with the root chakra, found at the base of the spine. It is thought to encourage compassion and aid in self confidence. Garnet is also the birthstone for January.
Spinel is know as the great imposter in some gemstone circles as it has been mistaken for ruby and sapphire in the past. The name is thought to come from the latin 'spinal' meaning 'thorn' or for the greek 'spark'. The gemstone itself is thought to have a soothing energy. One of the worlds most famous spinels is the Black Prince's Ruby which is a 170 carat red spinel set into the English State Crown and housed in the Tower of London.
