A little bit of history, myth and legend

Carnelian is a gemstone from the chalcedony group of gems which is part of the quartz family.  It has been treasured throughout the ages and can be found carved into rings dating back to the romans.  The name itself is derived from the latin word meaning 'fleshy' due to its orange to reddy orange colour.  The romans believed that the different hues of carnelian represented the different sexes: dark to symbolise man; light to symbolise women.  The whiter colour of carnelian is know as Sardonyx and if very dark can be called jasper.

The myth and legend associated with carnelian are associated with stopping bleeding and healing wounds.  It is also thought to bring good luck and protection.
