• Byzantine chain maille necklace in gold & rose gold and black spinel pendant


    This stunning necklace has been made using a chain maille weave called byzantine in gold and rose gold plated copper, a black spinel pendant drop has been added to the front of the necklace to complete it.

    Now a little bit of history!

    Chain maille is thought to have been invented before the 5th century by the ancient Celts.  The name is derived from the french 'maille' which is derived from th latin word 'macula' meaning 'mesh of a net'.  There are three main types of chain mailed which Byzantine comes under European.  It is thought that Byzantine chain maille was probably invented in Italy and to this day the design is commonly seen in Italian jewellery designs.
